JOURNEYMAN DIESEL MECHANIC

Reporting to the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor, the Diesel Mechanic will provide journeyman level mechanical work in support of diesel generators and associated equipment including engines, pumps, compressors, radiators, heat exchangers, lube oil systems, fuel oil systems, cooling systems, vehicles and other mechanical equipment for the Regional Operations. Incumbent must be willing to travel within the northern areas by small aircraft.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

Maintain and repair diesel engines, generators and auxiliary equipment
Complete scheduled overhauls
Plant inspections, preventative maintenance, installation and repairs to equipment
Troubleshoot various mechanical problems both on-site and via telephone
Maintain a clean and safe work environment
Provide assistance to other trades, as required
Administrative responsibilities such as trip reports and inventories, incident reports and work plans

Required Qualifications include:

Journeyman Mechanical Inter-Provincial Trade Certification
5 years of related experience, preferably in the utilities industry
Experience with electronic controlled engines
Eligible for Class 5 Nunavut driver’s license
Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams and specifications of a variety of types of mechanical equipment, including manufacturer’s manuals and parts books
Ability to communicate effectively and work as a team
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Advanced computer skills

Desirable Skills and Experience include:

Experience with large (1 Mw to 6 Mw) engines
First Aid Certification
Experience working and living in northern communities
Adaptability and ability to work cross-culturally

Preference will be given to beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

Salary starts at $36.13 per hour. We offer a comprehensive benefits package including location allowance of $12,846.00 per annum and relocation assistance. This position is included in the Nunavut Employee’s Union.
