The Corporation considers safety its first priority. The Corporation continually communicates with employees and organizes activities to raise safety awareness.
Training is provided to employees in areas such as First Aid and CPR, WHIMS, Work Code Protection, Safe Driving, Back Protection, etc. All new employees are given an orientation to safety upon hire, and all employees and contractors are issued with the Corporation's Safety Handbook.
Active Health and Safety Committees inspect workplaces for hazards, investigate incidents, review employee safety concerns, and organize safety education sessions. Committee members are trained in their responsibility as members. Annually these committees are brought together to discuss utility wide issues and programs.
The Corporation has on staff a full time Director of Safety, reporting directly
to the Chief Operating Officer. This full-time safety professional monitors,
supports, and reports on all matters pertaining to safety. Quarterly and
annual reports are made to the Board of Directors.
Continuous focus has resulted in an increase awareness of safety to the point where the Corporation has very few lost time accidents. A good safety record impacts on costs as it reduces the WCB premiums for the Corporation.
In addition to training for employees, the Corporation is provides training
for students in awareness of electricity and its hazards. This is a very
well received program involving each local plant superintendents and a tradesmen.
Specially designed mockups of community power plants and distribution systems
bring the are used during the presentations to students.
